The squad building challenges (SBC) were introduced on FIFA 17 and, we were all in the same boat, with the challenges being a bit of an unknown entity but something that had been suggested for the previous few years. We have experimented with these since their arrival in FUT and have come up with the following tips to help you understand their worth and whether you should invest your time/coins/players into these.
EA use this as a way to make more money
Don’t be fooled into thinking that EA is great guys and that they have the community at heart by introducing this to the game. If people are using their players that they have packed or coins that they have earned on these SBC’s then that is more coins out of circulation and less of a problem for EA. People will buy FIFA points to make more coins or get more players for their teams or SBC’s.
What have we learned this year?
We have wasted A LOT of coins in previous years, in players that we have acquired through SBC’s. We ended up with the POTM Hazard and Son as well as David Luiz, Lacazette, Giovinco, Fernandinho and a few others. We don’t regret every single one of these but we do wish we had retained some coins for purchasing players in the TOTS price drop. We would suggest that (and we’ll be doing the same for FIFA 20) if you’re not desperate for a player, or you have players that you already have that are performing well for you in your club, that you don’t replace them with POTM or other SBC players. Hazard, at his peak, cost us 700,000 FIFA 20 coins and David Luiz CDM cost just under 1 million. Giovinco cost 225,000 and we haven’t really used him. That’s 2 million coins that we would have had spare to spend on TOTS players. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE the David Luiz but is he 850,000 better than Kante....the answer is definitely no. Don’t rush into getting these players is what we’re trying to say.
Wait until later in the year
Firstly, the price will have dropped so you can complete the SBC’s for much, much cheaper. Secondly, there are that many special cards that are released by EA that the chances are that the SBC that the player receives will be outshone by a card later in the year. Take Son, for example. He had a POTM card on FIFA 17 that was 84 rated, then received multiple IF cards as well as another POTM card that was 89 rated. People who will have bought the 84 rated Son will have lost a few hundred thousand coins on that player. Lacazette is another example, we did the 87 rated SBC for him (and he scored nearly a goal per game for us), however, he received 4 cards that were higher rated than the 87 rated card AND the IF version of his 87 cards ended up costing a mere 55k compared to the approx cost of 250k which we spent on the SBC.
You can get lucky...
The pull behind SBC’s is not only the player that you receive but the offer of packs, as rewards for exchanging your players. Now, you could get lucky and pack someone big, which would obviously mean that the price you could sell the player you packed could obviously pay for the SBC you’re completing, meaning, in essence, that you get that player for ‘free’. Packing the player is the big if though
Our advice
Only complete an SBC if you KNOW that this player will feature in your teams for the rest of the year. If you can wait, wait, as they will likely get a higher rated card later in the year. SBC players are untradeable, in the main so also bear this in mind when you’re completing the challenges. With POTM SBC’s, if you can wait until the end of the month, then do so as the price you pay will dramatically decrease.
